When the National Weather Service forecast indicates temperatures at or below 40 degrees Fahrenheit in the city of “Bunnell”, The Sheltering Tree opens Flagler County’s only cold weather shelter within the Rock Transformation Center at 2200 N State Street, (US1). Doors are open to guests from 5:00pm – 8:00am. The shelter is offered in coordination with county wide support and dedicated, compassionate community-based teams. The shelter is open to anyone in need of a warm, kind, safe environment. Dinner, breakfast, cots, and caring volunteers are available to all who join us.
Our thanks to Flagler County Transportation who provide necessary transportation to and from the shelter!
Each team generously provides the complete menu for the evening, at no cost to the Shelter. They always provide a hot delicious, nutritious meal that our guests really appreciate. We also provide to-go boxes for those who do not stay the night or take left-overs to take with them or to give to one of their friends.
Current Dinner Teams:
Our committed Hospitality Teams serve from 4 PM until 10 PM, sometimes in two shifts. These teams set up cots, providing clean linens and blankets for our guest. When the doors open (usually at 5:00), the teams check in our guests at the hospitality table, near the entry door. Each guest is required to listen to our workers who read the Shelter’s rules and regulations and have them sign in on the log.
Current Hospitality Teams:
The Sheltering Tree cannot open without these highly valuable teams.
These teams serve from 10:00 PM until 6:00 AM the next morning. One person must be awake all times, to ensure the safety of our guest. Should an emergency of any kind arise, they are ready to handle any situation.
Current Teams and Members:
The Breakfast Teams arrive in sufficient time to serve a hot and hearty breakfast by 7:00 A.M. They prepare a variety of nourishing hot meals that may consist of bacon, sausage, eggs, pancakes, French toast, oatmeal, and fresh fruit(s). As soon as they arrive, in addition to preparing the meal, they put on coffee and a pot of hot water to allow our guest to have tea or hot chocolate.
Once the meal has been served, the team members will sit with a guest and make a friend. This helps to set the tone for their day, sending them off with a kind word and encouragement.
Current Rise 'N Shine Teams:
As soon as the guests have left the facility in the morning, the crew begins cleaning the restrooms. Then they restock supplies and straighten up.
If the shelter is not to open the following evening, all the cots are stored, and linens and dirty clothes are brought to their designated area to leave the church ready for the next event.
All this work is completed before closing the shelter for the day around 8:00 AM. Clean up teams are made up of revolving volunteers of The Sheltering Tree.
The Laundry Team, led by John & Sally Morris from St Thomas Episcopal Church, faithfully washes laundry between shelter openings. At the end of the season all blankets are washed by Santa Maria del Mar team led by Mary Wiggen & Gayle Krol.
